iPhone launch set for June 29

I noticed the new commercials which says the iphone will be available June 29. I personally thing the price point is a little hight for the masses to embrace.

I am not one of those that automatically bash anything Apple or Mac. But I have to say I am sick of Steve Jobs pictures. He always looks very pompous in a “I’m WAY too cool for you” way.

Western Digital 500GB External Hard Drive for $138.95

I received an email from BUY.com with their weekly specials. They have a Western Digital 500GB External Hard Drive for $138.95. I have a smaller version of this drive and it is excellent. I don’t think I will ever buy an internal slave drive again. External drives like this are great for performing backups ans storing large video files. Link.

Canon PowerShot SD800 versus SD1000

I was checking out the Canon PowerShot SD1000 and I can’t figure out why anyone would buy the SD800 instead. The SD1000 is $218 and the SD800 is $308.

Feature wise the SD800 has a 3.8x zoom compared to the SD1000’s 3.0x zoom, and that’s about the bigest difference I can see. Are people really willing to spend $80 for the extra zoom in a camera that’s bigger and heavier than the Canon SD1000 ?

Logitech Z-2300 Computer Speakers Review

If you are looking for great computer speakers look no further than the Logitech Z-2300 speakers. The Z-2300 system is a THX-certified 2.1-channel speaker system with ported subwoofer.

Be warned the the subwoofer is pretty large. It houses an 8inch long throw speaker in an enclosure that is about 11″ x 11″ x 15″. The subwoofer is rated at 120 watts and the speakers are 40 watts.

Sound wise I have never heard better sounding speakers for the computer. Quite honestly this system can reach sound levels that will shake your walls. The bass is unbelievable. When my non-computer geek friends are over they are shocked that all the sound they are hearing come from this little computer system. One time I was cranking a movie trailer and my wife ran into the room thinking there was a tornado outside.

I was so impressed with this system that I almost bought the Z-5500 Digital 5.1 system for my main surround sound speakers in the entertainment room.

You can buy the Z-2300 system new for about $115 at Amazon.

When I bough mine I took a chance on a refubished unit for about $70. It has worked perfectly.

Sennheiser HD 202 Over The Ear Headphones

There are time when you need headphones that block out ambient noise or offer more hi fidelity that earbuds or small headphones.

I use these headphones for my computer. They are great for doing audio editing and recording. I am very picky about my headphones. The Sennheiser HD 202 sound excellent and are a bargain $25 to boot at Amazon.

Some of the reviews complain that they are a little tight. I have to agree that they are a little tight when they are new. You get a little fatigued after wearing them for 20 minutes or so. However after that become a little broken in the headband does loosen up it death grip on your head and they become more comfortable with more use.

Highly recommended.

Kodak C763 7.1 MP Camera

I have been in the market for a compact digital camera. I currently have a Kodak Z series digicam. It looks like a digital SLR but technically isn’t. Ireally like it since it allows me take pictures in manual mode just like an SLR. The problem is that I want a simple point and shoot that can easily slip into my pocket without dragging my shirt down to my knees.

I was in my local Best Buy and checked out the Kodak C763. This camera is tiny and light weight. The price was about $179. It almost seemed perfect until I saw the video specifications. The C763 shoots Motion-JPEG at 15 fps. Uh oh…dealbreaker. I want to be able to shoot 30fps at 640 Ă— 480.

The reason I’m a little picky is that I have a friend with a Pentax camera. His video footage isn’t as good as a regular camcorder but it does a great job at Youtube quality footage.

More on other cameras I have looked at later. However if video is not a priority for you the I recommend you take a close look at the C763.

Garmin GPS Prices

In an earlier post I compared the C320, C330 and C340 GPS units.

At the time the prices were
C320 - $275
C330 - $320
C340 - $387

The current prices are
At the time the prices were
C320 - $275
C330 - $261
C340 - $329

It looks like have been significant price drops on the C330 and C340 but not the C320. I’m not sure why anyone would even consider the C320 at these price points.

Vizio VX37L HDTV

I was looking for a small HDTV for the Living Room. I have a downstairs family room with a surround sound system but we didn’t have a TV in the Living Room. I had read some good things about the Vizio HDTV. It features all the inputs I need and it has a built in QAM tuner. I went to Sam’s club to check it out and I was pretty impressed. The picture looked as good as $1200 HDTV. Oh I forgot to mention that I snagged this 37″ LCD for $699. There are some other low priced HDTV out there such as the Olevia brand, but they weren’t as feature rich as the Vizio.

I bought a flat wall mount from bestpricemounts.com . I routed all the wires through the wall for a cleaner look.

So far I have been very pleased with this TV.

Durabrand DVD-1002 DVD Player Small Footprint DVD Player

I was in the market for a small footprint DVD player that would not look obnoxious on a coffee table. I had wanted to get a legendary CyberHome CH-DVD 300S player but it appears they have been pulled off the market due to it’s region free playing.

I was in Walmart and noticed the Durabrand DVD-1002 DVD player. The unit has progressive scan, component video output and coaxial audio output plus composite RCA outputs. The unit also comes with a nice little remote.

This DVD player is a top loading unit and actually feels pretty well built.

All this for less than $30.

Overall I am quite pleased with the unit. I really like the top loading feature and it looks nice on a coffee table. The picture and sound quality are excellent. The remote, though small has a nice feel to it.

This is a can’t miss buy. If reliability ever become an issue who cares ? It’s at a disposable price point.

SanDisk Sansa Direct USB MP3 Player and Flash Drive

Allthough we have 4 Ipods in the house I have been quite content with my Creative MuVo 256mb MP3 player. What I really like about the MuVo is that I can just plug it into any USB drive and then drag and drop music onto it. I don’t neeed any special software to move music onto it. It also doubles as a USB flash drive.

I do wish my MUVo had more memory and an easier to read screen.

I did a search and found that the SanDisk Express™ MP3 Players may be exactly what I am looking for. What I really like about this unit is cable-less USB connection. This means I can plug it into any PC to copy files. It has a 15 hour rechargeable battery. I prefer a replaceable AAA but I suppose if it charges off the USB port I could live with that. The Sansa is currently available in only a 1GB model but it does have a microSD slot to expand the memory. You can buy 2GB microSD cards for less than $40.

The listed price for the SanDisk Sansa is $59.99. Ad $40 for more memory and you have a killer 3Gb mp3 player with a flash drive for about $100. It’s a definite alternative to the IPOD Nano for less than half the price.
